Arlene was born November 11, 1946 in Brooklyn to the late Alfhild and Edward Anderson. She grew up in Lake Telemark, NJ and Stamford, CT before settling in South Salem’s Lake Waccabuc community.
A 1967 graduate of the Greenwich Hospital Nursing School in Connecticut, Arlene worked as an RN in various capacities for over 50 years — including several years as the school nurse at John Jay High School in Cross River.
Arlene moved to Sarasota, FL in 1993 to care for her elderly mother. There, she worked as a case manager in the insurance industry, was president of the local chapter of the Sons of Norway, and enjoyed the opera, theater, and tag sale-ing with friends and family. She returned north in 2014 to be closer to her grandchildren and family and resided in Baldwin Place until her death.
Arlene was known for her brilliant mind, compassion, humor, and generosity. She was a voracious reader and lifelong learner who was the go-to source for everything from medical advice to entertainment trivia.
Arlene is survived by her daughter Kirsten Mavilia Marchesano of Westchester County; her two grandchildren, Madeline and Anderson Marchesano; daughter Patricia Marcum of Pennsylvania; and two sisters, Doris Cronin of Hartwick, NY and Leslie Jones of Bridgeport, CT as well as several nieces and nephews.
An open house celebration of Arlene’s life will be held on Saturday, June 11 at the Cyrus Russell Community House located at 779 Route 35 in Cross River, NY. Friends and family are invited to stop by between the hours of 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
